Shelby lies north of Great Falls on the great north
central plains of Montana. This is prime wheat growing
country, but large cattle and sheep ranches also predominate.
With the discovery of the Kevin-Sunburst oil field in
1922, Shelby became the center of a rich oil producing
area. Shelby is historically significant for the Dempsey-Gibbons
World Championship prizefight held there on July 4,
1923.
