Flathead Lake

Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. At 30 miles long and about 10 miles wide, flathead lake has become one of the most premier vacation destinations in the northwest. The majestic Mission Mountains border it to the east while the Salish Mountains border the west. Many lake communities dot the shore of this body of water including the unique town of Bigfork, as well as Polson at the southern tip. The lower half of the lake is within the borders of the Salish/Kootenia Indian Reservation. The area surrounding the lake is famous for its cherry orchards which litter the shore and are in mid-bloom beginning in May. Many islands also are scattered throughout the lake.
